AN INCREASING NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLISTS

The motorcycle has become an increasingly popular means of commercial transport in urban areas. Its popularity is attributed to the ease with which it maneuvers through traffic jams and the fact that it is readily available.

But the downside of this transport, dubbed boda boda, is characterized by the high risk of injury. A majority of motorcyclists are neither trained nor certified and licensed.

In failing to use protective gear, they expose themselves and
their passengers to the risk of severe injuries, not to mention pedestrians. They are normally reckless, lack discipline and
respect for other road users. They tend to over-speed and
 overload for quick returns.

The initial study indicates that the risk of dying in a motorcycle crash is 20 times higher than in a car accident. Injuries arising from motorcycle accidents are an emerging public health problem in Tanzania, but it remains a neglected area.
